Episode 46 Shownotes - Understanding DCIS

Hey, and welcome back!  As always with the science podcasts, I am a doctor, but not your doctor, so you should run all treatment decisions by your primary team!  I am not recommending or endorsing any particular treatment, as each person’s case is different, and determined by their particular cancer specifics.  This week is a lot of science and a smidgen of coaching.  I love to teach what I really know about – these podcasts are so easy to create and record, and I love feeling like I am sharing my knowledge and helping patients understand their disease!  I haven’t put a lot of focus on DCIS in the past, as I have the thought that these people are all doing fine, and not too worried because their prognosis is great, but I have patients who are struggling here too, so I know this isn’t always the case.  Maybe by helping people to understand it a bit better, there will be less fear.

But first, let me take a minute to share...

Episode 29 Shownotes - Everything You Wanted to Know About Radiation and Breast Cancer

Well, hello friends! Hope you are well, and getting into the holiday spirit. I don’t know about you, but I have this thought I should be MORE organized this year, because I am not doing lots of the things I normally do, so WHY am I so much farther behind than normal in my holiday prep? Anyone else finding this? But, I am on a roll this week knocking out some podcasts to make sure I have great content for you awesome folks AND time for my awesome family. Now, if I can just find an Xbox, which I didn’t get and they are now all sold out. Hmmm.

Looking back, I realized it has been a while since my last solo science podcast, so am going to do one today. Today’s episode is all about what I know inside out and backwards – I could talk about this in my sleep – who knows, maybe I actually do! Today, we are going to talk about radiation and its use specifically in breast cancer. All the questions you had, answered without even having to ask! How awesome is...

Episode 23 Shownotes - Understanding Triple Negative Breast Cancer

You are listening to Best Life After Cancer, Episode 23.

Hi, My Best Lifers and welcome back! I am launching my first weight loss coaching group November first. There is a focus for breast cancer patients, but it is awesome for anyone who has struggled with weight, and just not known why they can’t follow their plan. It is not a medical treatment – I don’t prescribe pills or surgery, I help you figure out what in your brain is keeping you from doing the things you know you need to do to be healthy. I’d love to have you join us. You can get information on my website, Best Life After Cancer under the services section.

In addition to working on that, I am coaching myself into loving fall (it used to be my least favorite season). And it is working! I have been so grateful to see all the beauty around me this fall. I am planning an upcoming podcast about this topic, so stay tuned. This week is the 3rd podcast in breast cancer month, and is by request a medical one...

Episode 5 Shownotes - Body Image Changes After Cancer

Hello, and welcome back! This is episode 5. I am really excited to talk to you today. Today we are going to talk about body image. This is such a loaded topic for many people even without the cancer card! Today we are going to look at how changes in body image impact daily life, and how to deal with 3 types of body image changes. The term body image means different things to different people, so I started this week by looking up the official definition of the term. Google describes body image as the subjective picture or mental image of one's own body. Cancer.Net describes body image as how a person views himself or herself. Because of the many physical and emotional changes after a cancer diagnosis, people may experience both positive and negative changes to their self-image. Today we are going to focus more on physical changes. We discussed some emotional changes in earlier podcasts, and will come back to them in the future. Both cancer and its treatment may change how you look....

Episode 4 Shownotes - Survivorship and the Most Important Changes You Can Make

Hi, and welcome back! This is episode 4. Almost a month in already! Time flies when you’re busy. Although, sometimes even busy doesn’t make it fly, and that is a bit of how I am experiencing social distancing. Today, I am going to spend a few minutes reviewing first. We have previously gone through allowing negative emotions. We discussed the differences between thoughts and circumstances. Last week we talked about our primitive brains vs. our upper brain, and how the primitive brain is working to keep us safe. I’m wondering - were you aware at all this week of your primitive brain in the background? It is interesting, whatever I write about, I find I think about a lot more that week. This past week, I was really noticing all the times my brain was trying to keep me safe, and how infrequently what it told me was useful. But, I am grateful for that old brain of mine, when I do things like step in front of a moving car in a parking lot, and my primitive brain acts...
