Episode 60 Shownotes - Mired in Menopause?!?

You are listening to Best Life After Cancer, episode number 60! Today we are talking Mired in Menopause, which is one of the less talked about side effects of treatment of cancer, and becoming more important as we have more young cancer survivors!

If you haven’t had a chance yet, please take a moment to rate, review and subscribe to the podcast on apple itunes!  I admit, I am a bit of a geek, and I do a little happy dance every time there is a new review for me to read!

Hey, friends!  When this episode airs, I will be doing a 5 day hiking trip in the White Mountains in New Hampshire.  We are doing hut to hut hiking along a part of the Appalachian trail.  The huts are spaced from 5 to 10 miles apart.  If you do the whole chain, it is 45.6 miles.  We are only doing a part of this, but even so, it is quite strenuous, with a lot of elevation.  The good news is that because there are huts to stay in, you don’t have to carry a...

Episode 58 Shownotes - A Compelling Reason to Live Healthy

You are listening to Best Life After Cancer, Episode Number 58.  Today, I will talk about my “why” that helps me follow my plans for healthy eating and limiting alcohol.  This is a necessary step to help you create a plan and stick to it!

Hey, friends!  We are just getting home today from a week in Maine with my parents, my family, and my brother and his family.  We have gone to the same place in Maine every year since I was born, and I think I only missed 2 summers - one during medical school, and one when I was pregnant with the twins - they were born in August, and before that, I was too uncomfortable to sit in the car for 9 hours, and after, we were trying to survive newborns!  We did go when Miles was born, also in August.  We went up when he was only 10 days old, which I have to say was maybe a bit crazy. This annual tradition is part of what keeps me centered and whole - a respite of sorts.  10 days, no tv, no...

Episode 57 Shownotes - Living as Your Future Self (aka Fake It Til You Make It!)

You are listening to Best Life After Cancer, Episode Number 57. Today we are talking mindset and a technique to help get you in the right headspace.

This podcast is the culmination of a discussion with someone I was coaching, and a discussion with one of my kids. You may know I have 4 boys that are rapidly becoming young men. They ask questions about how we live our lives, differences with how other people live and are learning to forge their own paths. We were recently talking about how different families spend money, how they eat, how they spend their free time. It was interesting, because we look at families we know that are super fit, thin, and spending quality time together often and as often as not, outside doing something cool. We compared this to those we know that are couch potatoes, usually not doing things as a family and not eating a healthy diet. (I admit, we may fall somewhere in the middle – we eat together every night, but my kids do play a fair amount of video...

Episode 52 Shownotes - Obstacles to Weight Loss

Well, hey, my friends.  I hope you are well and enjoying spring.  I guess some of the places people listen to me, it is already trending towards summer!   We are wrapping up the school year in my family.  My 3 older boys are studying for finals and in that high school crunch time.  It is so interesting watching teenagers – I really see how our brains create our experiences.  I have one who is pretty matter of fact – this is the work I have to do, and I will just buckle down and do it.  I have one who is really driven, but also has a lot of brain drama.  He spends a significant amount of time each day telling me how much there is to do, that he isn’t sure he can get it done, it is hard, and so on (while his sibling is just upstairs and cranking it out).  Then I have one who is a bit of a procrastinator.  He doesn’t think about it, or talk about it, or do it, until he is at the last moment.  They all...

Episode 51 Shownotes - The Math and Science of Weight Loss

Well, hey, my friends.  I did a recent webinar on Weight Gain after Cancer treatment, and people loved it, so I thought I might do a little recap as a podcast in case you missed it.  I am kicking off my next Cancer Weight Loss group in June, and if you are interested in learning more about it, you can get more information in the link in the shownotes or request a minisession on my website, www.bestlifeaftercancer.com to schedule a time to meet with me and discuss if it might be helpful.

Weight gain is really common after cancer treatment.  There are so many reasons – changes in metabolism, hormonal changes, maybe being less active, or eating to feel better (either physically or emotionally).  Why is weight so important?  There is no fat shaming going on here.  All human bodies are beautiful – we are all created perfectly imperfect.  This is important because obesity increases risk in many cancers.  First, this is...

Episode 50 Shownotes - Feeling Empty after Cancer

Hey, friends!  I want to share a win this week.  Sometimes, I have to admit, I am not certain that what I am doing is resonating with people.  I worry that people are not easily locating me and finding my work helpful, but this week I shared a new freebie on FB and over 300 people have downloaded it already!  That is exciting, right?   I am going to share with you today another freebie that I have that I think is awesome in terms of getting done treatment in the best possible place and starting to heal emotionally after treatment.

This week’s podcast sprang from something I have been hearing frequently from people after cancer.  I have been talking with so many patients in the Best Life After Cancer FB Group, and I have found something that many seem to be experiencing that I honestly had not been aware of in my medical practice.  I touched on this a few weeks ago, but wanted to really dig into this today, and provide some...

Episode 48 Shownotes - Wisdom from the First Year of Best Life After Cancer

Well, hey, folks!  This is a big week!  It is the anniversary of my first podcast a year ago.  So exciting!  I can’t believe I have done 48 episodes – at the start, I couldn’t imagine doing the first four, and now I am done 12 times that!  I know many of you feel like we are old friends at this point, but for the people who are new, I want to tell you how this all came to be.  As most of you know, I am a radiation oncologist, and I have been in practice for more than 20 years.  About 5 years ago, I was struggling in my life.  After having years of fertility treatments, and then ultimately, 4 kids, I was slowly gaining weight.  I thought this was from not exercising and really loving food.  I was fighting with my kids, and always irritated with my spouse.  I was feeling burnt out at work.  I blamed most of this on being too busy and feeling sluggish from my weight.  I knew I needed a change, but...

Episode 46 Shownotes - Understanding DCIS

Hey, and welcome back!  As always with the science podcasts, I am a doctor, but not your doctor, so you should run all treatment decisions by your primary team!  I am not recommending or endorsing any particular treatment, as each person’s case is different, and determined by their particular cancer specifics.  This week is a lot of science and a smidgen of coaching.  I love to teach what I really know about – these podcasts are so easy to create and record, and I love feeling like I am sharing my knowledge and helping patients understand their disease!  I haven’t put a lot of focus on DCIS in the past, as I have the thought that these people are all doing fine, and not too worried because their prognosis is great, but I have patients who are struggling here too, so I know this isn’t always the case.  Maybe by helping people to understand it a bit better, there will be less fear.

But first, let me take a minute to share...

Episode 43 Shownotes - The 50/50 of Every Human Life

Hey, my friends. Welcome, welcome. When this airs, I will just be getting back from a hiking trip with my family for the kids’ spring break. If you have listened to prior podcasts, you will know that I have a huge wanderlust and a bucket list of 25 epic trips in 25 years. Most of the trips on the list are outside of the US. But, even though my husband and I are vaccinated, my kids are not, and there are major restrictions in travel outside of the US still, so this spring break was one that we decided to stay local and do some hiking. It’s a good time to be away from crowds and 4 teen boys can carry good packs. I’ll share some pictures in the Facebook group of our adventures. I have to admit, I was hoping to complete our Patagonia trip that got cancelled at the start of the pandemic. Even though we had insurance, our trip was not reimbursed, but we got a credit to use within a year. Well, here it is, a year later, and the borders are still closed, so it’s...

Episodes 54 & 55 Shownotes - Science of Fear - Understanding our Brains

You are listening to best life after cancer, episode number 54.  Today we are talking about the science of fear and also something I just learned about, but made SO MUCH sense why people struggle to change their thoughts after cancer.

But first, I am going to tell you a little story from when I was a kid.  We lived out in the country with a stream about a quarter of a mile behind our house.  There were no other kids for miles. so my brother and I hung out a lot, even though he was 6 years younger than me.  At the end of a long winter, there was a day that was that perfect, really warm and beautiful spring day.  My brother and I were outside and headed to the stream.  We had spend time when things were frozen making a tree bridge across it.  We got down to the stream and onto the logs.  I was in the middle, with him right behind me, when I realized there were 3 snakes coiled up at the end of the logs in the sun - likely just emerging...
