Episode 17 Shownotes - Living Well After Cancer by Improving Strength and Fitness

You are listening to Best Life After Cancer, Episode 17.

Hey, my best lifers, and welcome back! This month we are spending the month focusing on living well. Whether it is during treatment, right after, or 5 years down the road. We can work every day on living our best lives where we are in the moment. The housekeeping first - As always, I am a doctor, but not your doctor, so especially when we are talking about what to do with your body and your health, please use common sense and run any recommendations by your primary team. A review would be awesome. I am trying to get to 100 reviews by Christmas, so give me an early Christmas present, and write one on Itunes.

I am writing this on Labor Day, while I am on call. I have a patient that needs to be emergently started on radiation today, so I am in my department. The process start to finish is not the quickest. While I wait for things like the patient to be transported from the floor, and other parts of the team to do their jobs to...

Episode 15 Shownotes - When People Say the Wrong Things

Hey, my best lifers, and welcome back! I missed this! I feel like 2 weeks is so long between episodes – I may have to rethink this! So – a few housekeeping things first. If you haven’t had a chance to leave a review if you listen on Apple podcasts, that would be awesome. A written review there is worth more than just a rating, so scroll down to the bottom, and leave a written review. That would really be helpful! Second, I have started doing FB lives teaching some of these concepts on the Best Life After Cancer MD FB page, so feel free to come and check it out. It is a place where you can ask questions real time. Love it. At this point, we are wrapping up summer here. We are starting to get the kids ready for school, pushing them to get done their reading, reminding them to finish their math packets. We are lucky – all of our guys are going back at least part time, so that is great. I worry about their mental states, not seeing their friends, not really...

You are listening to Best Life after Cancer, Episode 13.

Hey, my best lifers and welcome back! Hope this is finding you well and surviving the heat! In NJ, it has been over 95 every day. My littlest was in camp, and man, the poor guy came home red and looking like a bit of a wilted plant all week. It gave me a good excuse to stay inside and work on the next podcast. This week has been great - I had a chance to interact with some awesome people on a cancer survivor and caregiver group on Facebook. I was so happy to share what I have learned, and see again where people are struggling. It helps me to really tailor things to help my survivors to get faster and better results. It was so inspiring to hear patient’s stories, and watch them support and love each other. I am amazed to see the strength, resilience and courage of some of these people. And, I was reminded...

Episode 12 Shownotes - Dealing with Fear or Guilt From Heritable Conditions

Well, hey there, my best lifers. Welcome back to the podcast. How are you? If you’re new here, welcome, welcome, welcome. So glad to have you here.

I have a few things I want to talk to you about. First of all, did you know that I am on Instagram? I am. You should follow me for sure. So just go to BestLifeAfterCancerMD, and you’re going to be able to find me. You should subscribe because there’s good info on there and some good reminders of what you’re working on here, what I’m teaching you, lots of good stuff. So make sure you come find me over there. Super fun – I was more of a Facebook person, and then my kids said I should get on Instagram so they could follow me, and who wants anything more than to have their teenage boys follow them voluntarily, right? And then when I ask a question on there, go ahead and answer me, okay? I’d love to...

Episode 11 Shownotes - Purposeful Creation of Joy

Hi, my Best Lifers, and welcome back! This is episode 11! Next week I’ll be 3 months into this! Hard to believe. I am really excited to watch things coming together. This whole endeavor is helping me grow in so many ways. It has been a long time since I really had to challenge myself mentally and learn something totally new. Now I have learned how to create a podcast, and I am almost finished creating a website on my own! It gives me such a great feeling of accomplishment. And, I am ready to let you guys in on something fun. I have had people asking if they are able to work with me as a coach. I am starting to take clients on a very limited basis, since I am still working full time in medicine, along with being a wife and mother. The way it works is that you email me at [email protected], and we will set up a mini-session. What that is is a free 20 minute call where I coach you on one specific issue you are having. I coach you, and if you find it helpful, if we are...

Episode 10 Shownotes - Cancer Survivorship - The Significant Benefit In Survival From Exercise

Hi, and welcome back to episode 10. This week we are going to step back from the weight loss, and into another of the survivorship podcasts. What that means is that this week I predominately have my medical cap on, and there is going to be data, and it may be challenging to understand all of it. If you have questions, reach out through the Best Life After Cancer MD facebook page. This topic for this week is exercise. Many adults may consider exercise as a means to lose weight, or perhaps reduce their risk for cardiovascular disease, but they often do not realize that recreational physical activity (RPA) is an important tool in both the prevention of cancer and reduction in recurrence. This topic is near and dear to my heart for survivors. I feel really passionately that as a medical community, we may not be making this data clear to each and every one of our cancer survivors. One of the reasons I think some physicians don’t focus on it is because as a doctor, it is something...

Episode 9 Shownotes - Choosing Your Food Protocol

You are listening to Best Life After Cancer, Episode 9.

Hello, my best lifers! Hope you are doing well today. It is such a stressful time in the world, and I especially have sympathy for all cancer patients today. Regardless of color, between the pandemic and riots, and all of the hightened emotions, it is a rollercoaster for all people, and having cancer on top of all that is just more challenging than it has been in the past. I am thinking about you, and trying to find ways to make this a little easier.

As I told you last week, I am going to continue with the weight loss work for today, because I really think that managing weight is important from a survivorship perspective. Being overweight or obese is clearly linked to an overall increased risk of cancer diagnosis and we believe also contributes to an increased risk of recurrence in some cancers. According to research from the American Cancer Society, excess body weight is thought to be responsible for about 11% of cancers in...

Episode 8 Shownotes - Weight Loss For Cancer Patients

You are listening to Best Life After Cancer, Episode 8.

Hi, and welcome back. It’s such a pleasure to get to spend time with you every week. I always look forwards to sharing my thoughts and knowledge with you – I feel really honored that you are spending this time with me and wanting to hear what I have to say. I’d love to hear your thoughts, as well, and you can interact with me on the Best Life After Cancer MD facebook page to ask questions or leave comments. It is a way you can let me know what you are struggling with, and then I can answer there or or in the form of a future podcast! For many cancer patients, I find that weight gain is a real challenge after treatment ends. I think for some, this is partly due to hormonal changes including cortisol, or the stress hormone, partly medication based, and partly due to wanting comfort, and eating to feel better. Last week, we did some work on physical aspect of weight loss, reviewing some of the hormones that...
